Production
Good activated carbon derived from walnut shell (coconut, seed of some fruit crops.) First of activated carbon made from the bones of cattle (bone charcoal[34]). The essence of the activation process consists in opening the pores in the carbon material in the closed state. This is done either thermochemically (material pre-impregnated with a solution of zinc chloride, potassium carbonate, or some other compounds and heated without access of air), or by treatment with superheated steam or carbon dioxide or a mixture thereof at a temperature of 800-850 degrees. In the latter case, it is technically difficult to obtain a combined agent having such a temperature. Widespread acceptance of the supply to the apparatus to activate simultaneously with saturated steam to the limited amount of air. Some coal is burned in the reaction space required temperature is achieved. The yield of activated carbon in this embodiment, the process is significantly reduced. The specific surface area then the best brands of activated carbons can reach 1800-2200 m2 per 1 g of coal.[2] Distinguish between macro-, meso - and micro - pores. Depending on the size of the molecules, which needs to be kept on the surface of the coal should be produced coal with different ratios of pore sizes.

Application
In gas masks
A classic example of the use of activated carbon is associated with the use of his gas mask. Developed N. D. Zelinsky mask saved countless lives of soldiers in the first world war. By 1916, he was adopted almost in all European armies.
In the production of sugar
Originally for the purification of sugar syrup from the coloring substances in sugar production was used bone charcoal. However, this sugar should not be consumed in the post, as of animal origin. Owners of sugar factories began to produce "lean sugar", which is either not cleaned and had the appearance of colored sweets, or cleaned using charcoal.

Other applications

Activated carbon is used in medicine, chemical, as a carrier of catalysts in many reactions itself acts as a catalyst, pharmaceutical and food industries. Filters containing activated carbon, are used in many modern devices for the treatment of drinking water.
Characteristics of activated carbon
The pore size
A decisive influence on the pore structure of activated carbons have the source materials for their production. Activated carbons on the basis of the coconut shell are characterized by a higher proportion of micropores (up to 2 nm), on the basis of coal - a higher proportion of mesopores (2-50 nm). A large proportion of macropores characteristic of activated carbons based on wood (more than 50 nm).
The micropores are particularly suitable for the adsorption of molecules of small size, and the mesopores for the adsorption of larger organic molecules.
Iodine index
Most of the carbon is preferably adsorb small molecules. Iodine index is the most fundamental parameter used to characterize activated carbon. Iodine index - a measure of activity level (higher number indicates a higher degree of activation), often measured in mg/g (typical range 500-1200 mg/g). Iodine index is also a measure of the content of the micropores of activated carbon (0 to 20 Å), or up to 2 nm), which is equivalent to the surface area of carbon between 900 m2/g and 1100 m2/g. This is the standard measure when using activated carbon for the purification of substances in the liquid phase.

Hardness

This is a measure of the resistance of the activated carbon abrasion. It is an important indicator of activated carbon required to maintain its physical integrity and opposition to the frictional forces, the process of backwashing etc There are significant differences in the hardness of activated carbon, depending on the raw materials and activity level.
Granulometric composition
The smaller the particle size of the activated carbon, the better the access to the surface area and faster level
