N-propyl alcohol
Propyl alcohol (propan-1-ol, 1-propanol) C3H7OH — Monohydric alcohol. Found in nature in small quantities as the product of fermentation. So, it is a component of fusel oil. There is the isomer 1-propanol — isopropyl alcohol (propan-2-ol, 2-propanol).
Colorless liquid with an alcohol odor, miscible with water and forms with it an azeotropic mixture (b. p .. 87,5—of 88.0°C, 71,8 % by weight 1-propanol). Soluble in ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, benzene and other organic solvents.
1-Propanol used as solvent for waxes, polyamide ink, natural and synthetic resins, polyacrylonitrile; the production of low pressure polyethylene; in order to obtain carbomethoxyamino; as a degreaser of metals; Aristotel polyvinylchloride adhesives; gelatinise and plasticizing agent cellulosolytic films; an alkylating agent. It is also used for the synthesis of propionic acid, propionic aldehyde, propyl, of Propylamine, surfactants, pesticides, some pharmaceuticals.
1-Propanol has a high octane number (118). However, the production of it is too expensive for to become a widely used fuel.
