Calcium chloride

 

Chloride calcium CaCl2 — calcium salt of hydrochloric acid. Registered as food additive E509. Is considered harmless.

White crystals with a density of 2.15 g/cm3, melting point 772 °C. Has a high hygroscopic properties. Solubility (g per 100 g H2O): 74 (20 °C) and 159 (100 °C). Aqueous solutions of calcium chloride freezes at low temperatures (20% — when -18,57 °C, 30% — at -48 °C).

Chloride calcium produced as a by-product in the production of soda (in process recovery of ammonia).

Application

In laboratory chemical calcium chloride is used as filler for dewatering tubes, also called chlorellae intended for isolation of substances in the vessel from the water vapor of the atmosphere and for the dehydration of gases. In the first case, this tube is straight or bent at an angle of 90 degrees and has a one spherical phase, in the second it is bent in the form of a U and has two spherical plot.

Chloride calcium is also used to produce metallic calcium, to drying and lowering dew points and impulse gas technology:

On gas-distributing stations, compressor stations of main gas pipelines;

On automobile gas-filling compressor stations;

On the objects of gas production in the preparation of gas for transportation.

In addition also, it is used in the following areas:

In mitigation of beef and lamb (reducing the cost of freezing, storage and loading);

The canning of vegetables and fruits (storage of apples impregnated with 8 % solution);

As an accelerator of the setting time of cement;

For dust control of gravel roads;

As a deicing agent;

As curing agent in foods (The thickener to obtain a low-calorie jelly);

In dairy industry in the production of fermented dairy products, and plays an important role in the formation of a clot. The addition of calcium chloride leads to an increase in output the final product and improves its properties;

In medicine.

In the regulation of water hardness with the production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages

In the manufacture of bread (preservative)

When transporting frozen goods by sea — to avoid water freezing in the drainage system

For preparation of killing fluid during performing repairs on oil and gas wells.

 

Chloride calcium has been registered as a food additive, and now is actively involved in the composition of foods. Classification Е509 belongs to the group emulsifiers and is used in food industry as hardener. Basically, this Supplement is widely used for the production of curd, cheese and milk powder. In the latter case it serves for thickening of the product, as calcium ions bind proteins well, and also to increase its ultimate number. Also calcium chloride is used in the production of caviar and vegetable and fruit juices. Additive compensates for the level of calcium in dairy products (milk loses a part of calcium during pasteurization). In some cases, calcium chloride is added and pastry products for example, in chocolate, and actively opposed the hardening of the product. In rare cases E509 used in brewing, where he served as a corrective water used for beer production.

Calcium chloride is used in chemical, timber and woodworking, oil refining and petrochemical industries, in refrigeration technique, construction and production of building materials, color metallurgy, the construction and operation of highways, as well as in as desiccant and for other purposes.
