Stearic acid

Stearic acid (octadecanoic acid) is a monobasic carboxylic acid of aliphatic corresponding to the formula С17Н35СООН (can also be found the entry in the form of molecular formulas (gross formula)C18H36O2 or other options rational formula CH3(CH2)16COOH or C17H35CO2H). White crystals, insoluble in water and soluble in diethyl ether.

Chemically pure stearic acid has the appearance of colorless crystals. Stearic acid insoluble in water, but soluble in ether. Odorless.

Stearic acid is obtained by hydrogenation of oleic acid. Also get it synthetically — oxidation of saturated hydrocarbon compounds manganese.

Stearic acid is one of the most common naturally occurring fatty acids, part the form of glycerides in the composition of lipids, especially triglyceride fats of animal origin, the latter perform the function of the energy depot. The contents stearic acid in animal fats as in mutton fat (~30 %), vegetable oils 34%, (cocoa butter).

Synthesized in the body from palmitic acid by the action of enzymes — elongase, responsible for the elongation of aliphatic chain of fatty acids.

Main industrial method of producing stearic acid is extracting it from the stearin is a product of the hydrolysis of fats in the manufacture of soap. Although stearic acid can be extracted from vegetable fats, usually for its production use animal fat.

Widely used in the cosmetic industry: sodium stearate is one of the the main components of soap, stearic acid itself is a part of many cosmetics. Used in the manufacture of candles and as an emollient in the production of rubber. Stearates of sodium, calcium, lead are used as components of greases. Also, stearic acid is admixed to the ethylene vinyl acetate during the production of plastic Shoe.

Stearic acid (Stearic Acid) is part of the fats triglycerides of animal origin. Triglycerides perform the role of a energy depot, and energy is known to be essential for the recovery processes in cells.

Stearic acid in cosmetics is a white powder with a melting point of about 70 º C. Get it from the stearin, which is a product of splitting fats for making soap. By itself, this acid is the most common of all fatty acids in nature. Stearates (salts of stearic acid) found in vegetable and animal fats in the form of esters. Stearic acid usually produced from animal fats, but can be fetched from vegetable raw materials – cocoa, palm oil, soybeans.

Stearates widely used in cosmetics, in the production of Soaps, stearic and she acid in cosmetics is added as an emulsifier in creams and other cosmetics.

Use component in cosmetics does not affect the condition of the skin. Mainly used in as:

• Emulsifier;

• The stabilizer of emulsions;

• Thickener for solid media (eg, deodorants, stickers);

• Cloud emulsion (emulsion makes it opaque).

In some is used as a soothing and emollient component.

Stearic acid is widely used in chemical, petrochemical, paper, rubber and other industries. It is used for alcohols, technological processes of manufacture of pastes, emulsions, monomers and stabilizers. Also used as a component of greases. In the textile industry stearic acid used for skin treatment. Stearic acid is used in the food industry in the manufacture of Margarines, in adding fats to the dough as cream-based pastries.

Transportation stearic acid (stearin) by rail, road and water types of transport. The carriage is covered transport means in standard factory packaging or in airtight containers. When transportation should be protected from moisture and heat.

For packaging stearic acid used polypropylene bags weighing 25 kg. Storage stearic acid is carried out in original packaging in a dry and covered premises. During storage, avoid moisture and heat.
