Boric acid (orthoboric acid or lat. acidum Boricum) is a weak, monobasic the Lewis acid, commonly used as insecticide, antiseptic, flame retardant, neutron absorber, or precursor to obtain a other chemical compositions. Has the chemical formula H3BO3 (or B(OH)3).

Colorless crystalline substance in the form of flakes, odorless, has a layered triclinic lattice in which the acid molecules are connected by hydrogen bonds in a flat layers, the layers are connected by intermolecular bonds (d = 0,318 nm).

Metamora acid (HBO2) is also a colorless crystals. It exists in three versions — the most stable γ-НВО2 with a cubic lattice, β-НВО2 with the monoclinic lattice and the α-НВО2 with rhombic lattice.

Application boric acid:

In nuclear reactors as the neutron absorber dissolved in the coolant.

Boric fertilizer.

In the laboratories used for preparation of buffer solutions.

In medicine — as an independent disinfectant for adults as well as a 2% solution for washing the skin after contact with alkali.

On the basis of boric acid produces different combination of drugs (group ATKH D08AD), for example pasta Teymurova.

In photography the composition of the fine developers and sour fixer to create a weak acidic environment.

Jewelry — as the basis of fluxes for soldering of gold alloys.
