Phthalic anhydride is the anhydride of o-phthalic acid.
Colourless crystals, practically insoluble in water, moderately soluble in organic solvents, square 130,8 °C, Kip. to 284.5 °C.
Phthalic anhydride is an important source product in the production of various derivatives of phthalic acid; esters, phthalimide, phthalonitrile, etc. condensation of phthalic anhydride with phenol get dyes such as phenolphthalein. A significant amount of phthalic anhydride is used in the production of glyptal and pentaftalevye resins (see Alkyd resins), intermediate products and dyes, fluorescein derivatives, rhodamine and anthraquinone; medicines, for example ftalazolom and fenilina (used when increased blood clotting).
